Older Americans Month 2025

Summary
Flip the Script on Aging!

The Administration for Community Living (ACL) was created in response to the principle that "older adults and people of all ages with disabilities should be able to live where they choose, with the people they choose, and with the ability to participate fully in their communities." ACL administers programs throughout the country, authorized by a variety of statues, such as the Developmental Disabilities Act and the Older Americans act. They accomplish this through research and education. Also, by funding services and supports to community-based organizations.

Each year the ACL sponsors a national observance of Older Americans Month. The observance is in May and promotes the contributions and value of older Americans. It also reaffirms a commitment to serving older adults.

This year's theme is "Flip the Script on Aging." The purpose is to transform the perception, language, and approach to aging. There are so many misconceptions and negative stereotypes for this population, and you can help challenge them!

There are many opportunities for older adults to stay active, connected, and engaged, finding new opportunities in all phases of life. For example:

  • A local school, library or community center could arrange for an older adult to share or read stories to the group.
  • Have students interview older adults for a project.
  • Coordinate a class, workshop, or lecture on subjects relevant to older adults.
