It's hard to believe but July 2024 is the 34th anniversary of the passing of the ADA. What were you doing when the ADA passed? I was busy raising three kids and was completely oblivious to the new law. Since then, I've become acutely aware of the ADA, having been with the RMADAC now for 32 years, and raising a son who became profoundly deaf as a young toddler.
In these 34 years, the benefits that the ADA has provided to our country, while not yet perfect, are phenomenal. I've watched as barriers have been erased, or at least partially erased, in the physical realm as well as in providing effective communication, the acceptance of service animals in public, and an overall greater understanding and acceptance of disability as a normal part of life. It's important to know that if you are not a part of the disability community at this time, there will come a time that you or someone close to you will join the community. The ADA benefits EVERYONE.
